In Graphic Design we learned about the Gestalt Principles. Gestalt Theory is a branch of psychology which originated in Germany in the 1920s.
This theory helps us understand each other better, providing an explanation for how humans view and perceive images which in turn helps designers communicate their ideas, and to reach more people clearly and without confusion. The Principles are the following six words: Closure, Continuation, Figure Ground, Proximity, Similarity, and Symmetry, After reviewing these principles and their definitions, students divided into groups and were asked to visually represent each principle using only paper squares. They were allowed to edit the squares, and to use scraps of black paper if necessary. They worked together to develop their ideas. After each creation, we all met as a class and discussed reactions to the designs, and how they represented the principle. The second step of this process required students to use what they understood about the principles in the illustration of descriptive words using the black squares. We again met and discussed the solutions, and identified the principles used to create the image. This activity was in preparation for our next project on article layout. The results are above, enjoy!
