Kaylee Falso and Lily Datz participated in the Holocaust Art and Writing Contest sponsored by Chapman University. Mr. Tidd also sent an essay written by Caroline Hagen. These students listened to testimony from survivors of the Holocaust and responded through visual art, and the written word. They have been sent out to California for judging! Wish them luck! See a link below for more about the contest. Today was an exciting day! Claudia Lambdin brought in bins of clean white sneakers for Art Club students to begin painting! Last week everyone learned about Folk Art from Claudia, whose own artwork is inspired by this style. They then got pieces of scrap canvas to start developing their own theme for their sneakers, and got used to using the paint markers. Students will be working on these sneakers all throughout March, and once they are closer to finishing, Claudia will return to show us how to add last minute details in order to bring it all together. I will keep sharing as these designs evolve! If anyone is interested in Art Club, please stop by room 226! Mr. Kringer made his final choices and after many edits, students submitted their designs that have been sent to the printer! Students in Graphic Design are currently working on posters for the upcoming Spring play- The Addams Family. We were lucky enough to have our friends from Chase Design return and give us a critique on the work developed so far. They learned a lot about balancing colors, and using space in a thoughtful and intuitive manner. It was helpful to get outside perspectives. Next week students will be professionally presenting their idea to Mr. Kringer, who will ultimately choose which poster will go to the press. Students learned that when presenting their work, they must defend their ideas with pride, and not talk about the things they don't like about their work. Speak with confidence! I will let you know which poster makes it to the printer! More to come! A nice gift for all of us. Enjoy this video of children from Colombia receiving portraits from high school students from all over the United States. Unfortunately we can't ever see the children that our artists from Skaneateles completed for privacy reasons, but just seeing the look on the children's faces is enough to know that Abbie Scala, Anna Neuenschwander, Jaicey Jones, and Mary Teixeira made a huge difference in their lives this year. Also enjoy below some recent works emerging from the art room. Have a warm, safe and magical holiday... We had fun at Art Club today! Some newcomers learned how to make pinchpots, and some returning students worked more on their original work. Some other students stopped in to draw and paint as well. And, to top it off, we made hot chocolate. Our next meeting will be Wed. December 14th! If you started a pinch pot, and you wanted to finish it...maybe you wanted to make someone a gift? Stop by anytime to finish it up! In Graphic Design we learned about the Gestalt Principles. Gestalt Theory is a branch of psychology which originated in Germany in the 1920s.
This theory helps us understand each other better, providing an explanation for how humans view and perceive images which in turn helps designers communicate their ideas, and to reach more people clearly and without confusion. The Principles are the following six words: Closure, Continuation, Figure Ground, Proximity, Similarity, and Symmetry, After reviewing these principles and their definitions, students divided into groups and were asked to visually represent each principle using only paper squares. They were allowed to edit the squares, and to use scraps of black paper if necessary. They worked together to develop their ideas. After each creation, we all met as a class and discussed reactions to the designs, and how they represented the principle. The second step of this process required students to use what they understood about the principles in the illustration of descriptive words using the black squares. We again met and discussed the solutions, and identified the principles used to create the image. This activity was in preparation for our next project on article layout. The results are above, enjoy! We were lucky enough to be visited by three Adobe Illustrator Experts in our Graphic Design lab today! Andy Schweitzer, Bonnie Dudden, and Jon Cammarata are full time Graphic Designers from Chase Design. They came into our room 5th period and sat one on one with each student, giving them tips, and answering questions about issues that came up when working on their projects. There were a lot of "Ah HAHs!" and "Oh Wows!!" As students learned new things that they had been trying to figure out throughout their process. Adobe Illustrator is simply a tool- another way of using a paint brush or pencil. Knowing what you plan on making and why you plan on making it is the most important thing- and that is why sketchbooks and sketching is so important. It was so informative and helpful, and we are excited to have these wonderful designers back again. They will probably return before winter break to give a formal critique of the artwork that has been made so far. Thank you to Lori Ruhlman for the photos, and a huge thank you to Chase Design!! We are lucky to have them in our backyard!! |
