A huge part of Art is about the process. Those cool places in the middle where things are not done yet. Here are some treats from this week- I hope they inspire you to notice the little things this weekend.

Think you "can't" do art? I dare you to come have fun and give it a try!! Bring your friends! Hope to see you here November 8th!
Do these drawings look strange to you? They should! Students in Studio Art learned about how to truly understand their subject matter. The rules are simple.
1. Do not look at the paper, and only look at the object you are trying to draw. 2. Only use pen, and do not pick your pen up off the page- your lines should be continuous. 3. Go very slowly, and pretend your eye is latched on to the pen that is moving across the paper. Follow the contours of the object you are drawing, and try to capture as many details as you possibly can. 4. Don't worry if it doesn't look "right", just go with it. Ultimately you will have some drawings that capture truth. They will look weird and distorted! This is OK, and the perfect thing to work on with Halloween so close! Blind Contour is a good tool you can use when you are struggling with representing things on paper. It is a good way to truly see and understand what you are working on. As we head into our first drawing project using hands as our subject matter, this will be a good exercise to utilize when we need a break, and are feeling stuck. We had a great time this weekend in NY! We started off walking through Central Park and checked out the MET Breuer, a smaller museum connected to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We then went to the opening night award ceremony for the Film Festival. Saturday was spent watching student films at AMC Theater in Times Square, and spending a little time to explore the city. Sunday we were able to watch some more films, and attended the Blue Carpet Award Ceremony at Kings Theater in Brooklyn. Monday we were able to head to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. We were all impacted immensely by this experience. I will be posting quotes, and photos as I receive them. Keep checking in. Here is a taste of some of the creativity coming out of our Graphic Design class this year. I have included imagery of our alphabet project. Students bring in a newly designed letter each Friday. They must create a version of each letter by the end of the semester! This project keeps our minds fresh, and open to new ideas. Students may use any media they would like- whether it is paint, or drawing in Illustrator. As surprising as it may sound, Graphic Design is not just about computers. Designers must sketch and draw to help them come up with their final pieces. This is something all designers must practice. We have also been talking about line, and shape, those basic and essential elements that all artists must consider. Our first assignment was to create thoughtful compositions using only lines. Everyone drew 16 thumbnail sketches (thumbnail sketches are small preliminary drawings). Once this was complete we came together as a class and chose the three strongest designs of the 16 drawn. These 3 were replicated in Adobe Illustrator. Ultimately one was chosen as the final piece to turn in. As you can imagine, the original designs evolved and changed. Our next assignment was in the same format, except they were limited to using only 3-4 shapes. We are now working on 16 abstract thumbnails but focusing only on color. I will update you when these are complete! These studies enable us to practice coming up with multiple ideas, and to pay attention to what makes a design- even a simple one- strong and compelling. It also is very revealing when we understand why other designs are not as strong, and what we can do to improve them. Stay posted for more to come! |
